SDG's Impact
Programs

Why Choose Biogas Programs

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.

With just under ten years left to achieve the SDGs, world leaders in 2019 called for a Decade of Action and delivery for sustainable development, and pledged to mobilize financing, enhance national implementation and strengthen institutions to achieve the Goals by the target date of 2030. Biogas technology adoption programs designed for farmers have multiple environmental and social impacts and co-benefits. In fact, our programs directly impact 10 out of the 17 SDGs. For this reason, our work has been recognized for reporting tangible and measurable impacts. In 2020, Shell Foundation, IPE Triple Line and Sistema.bio released the report Demonstrating the potential of biogas to contribute to the SDGs, which analyzes the contribution of biogas towards SDGs.

Key Benefits of Biogas Programs

Biodigesters use animal waste, which if untreated can release methane into the atmosphere. As methane is a powerful greenhouse gas 25 times more damaging than CO2, reducing emissions helps combat climate change.

Biogas is typically used for cooking, and often replaces harmful and inefficient energy sources such as wood or charcoal. This increases access to affordable and clean energy, and has an important health benefit as wood or charcoal generate toxic fumes which contribute to a range of health conditions.

Biofertilizer is an incredibly effective natural fertilizer, which improves agricultural productivity and boosts soil health, and is therefore a potent tool to address food insecurity.

BAIF, Sustain+

Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar pradesh, Assam

In collaboration with BAIF-Development Research Foundation and Sustain Plus, Sistema.bio has successfully installed 1,000 biodigestors for small-scale dairy farmers who own an average of 4-5 cows. The primary goal of this project was to provide women with a reliable and sustainable source of clean energy, reduce their dependence on firewood, and implement an appropriate farm waste management system. This program has also created self-employment opportunities for rural families, particularly those in disadvantaged communities.

Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka

In 2017, CInI and Sistema.bio joined hands to initiate a biodigestor program in rural communities of India. The main objective of this program was to empower the tribal households residing in the central belt of India, specifically in Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The program aimed to secure their livelihoods and enhance their quality of life by promoting common values and missions between the two organizations.

IRRI México, W.K.Kellogg Foundation

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Since 2014, the International Renewable Energy Institute Mexico (IRRI), in alliance with Sistema.bio, has been working under the financing of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in the Yucatan Peninsula. The objective of the collaboration was to implement various programs to offer Maya small-scale producers in the region our biodigester technology. Now, more than 10,000 people have benefited from this tripartite process and have successfully utilized biodigesters as a comprehensive waste management system that impacts their food security, energy and water security, and improves agricultural practices.

Amazon Conservation Team

Caquetá, Colombia

The Amazon Conservation Team has been working for over two decades to preserve tropical forests and empower local communities. Their mission is to aid farmers in remote areas to enhance their practices, operate more efficiently and take responsibility for the environment. Their partnership with Sistema.bio includes six Sistema 12 biodigesters, which are anticipated to assist local farmers in becoming more self-sufficient while also reducing their consumption of firewood as a source of energy. This will help to minimize firewood consumption and, as a result, conserve the forests of the Colombian Amazon.
